My son is a 3rd generation sailor, HM1 (DV/EXW) stationed at Kitsap, WA.

I reported aboard as an unrated seaman apprentice out of boot camp in early September 1971. Seattle was in the harbor waiting to go out for the week. I had to take a launch out to meet her. I was met on the gangway by Capt. Townsend. However, I didn't know that till later. He took my sea bag and almost dropped in in the bay. I was originally assigned to the Master at Arms and Personnel where I met Alan Pillman, Don Lopez and others. If I remember correctly, we were in GITMO in Nov. I was assigned to a repair locker amidships. I could remember thinking as I heard "Stand by for hit alpha" that I would be hit alpha. I soon transferred to Weapons Division where they needed Fire Control Techs.
