Incident during Med Cruise of '77
Posted Monday, February 4, 2013 06:26 PM

Greetings Shipmates,

My name is Tony Fernandez I was an OS3 serving on the ship's Master-At-Arms force during the Med cruise of '77. While inport Naples Italy, one of our crewmembers stabbed and nearly decapitated an Italian national who was a taxi driver. As duty master-at-arms I went to the crime scene with Naples police, took pictures, did as much as I could without intruding on their crime scene. I later wrote a detailed incident report for our own records, the Fleet Commander and the U.S. Consul in Naples.

The images of the crime scene have plagued me throughout my Naval Career and life. I was medically retired as an OS1 over 15. I am in desperate need of getting help on where to find the SEATTLE's ship's records so that I may access the Master-at-arms incident reports and get a copy of that particular report. I am filing for PTSD with the V.A. and they will need every piece of pertinent info regarding my claim for verification.

If ANYONE can help in pointing me in the right direction as to where to look, it would be greatly appreciated by myself and my family. I thank you all in advance for any assistance you can give. As always, fair winds and following seas to ALL SEATTLE Vets.

Tony Fernandez

OS1-USN/SW (Ret)

It may have occured on the 73-74 cruise as well, but it certainly did happen on the 77-78 cruise. I was the MA on duty and had to go ashore with the Carabinieri and wrote the incident report myself. I already have 1 corrobarating statement from a shipmate who was on that cruise with me. It is unfortunate that this happened twice on board the SEATTLE, but it did.

Hi Edward,

I remember you as well. I had a lot of respect for Lt. Rockwell. Those were good times and bad times for me. Since you were privy to the incident Edward, would you mind if my American Legion Advocate who is representing me for my PTSD claim, got in touch with you in order to procure a statement? My email is texas_gamer@centex.net. I would appreciate your assistance in this. Can't begin to tell you the hell I have been through since then. I was medically retired after 16 years as an OS1.

Good hearing from you. Drop me a line regarding the incident. Looking forward to jaw jacking with you further. I belong to a page on facebook called "Brothers of the Crow" It is for who were E4 to E6, no chiefs or officers allowed..LOL!! We would be happy to have you join in.

Talk to you soon.

Tony

i willing to bet the incendent is recorded in the quartermaster log , if you dont know that is the log in the pilot house that is required by law to have a written record of all pilot house activity, ship movement and  including all incidents.

that log is a matter of public record now and should be housed at National Archive Historic Naval Ship Assoc, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, Maryland.

hope to meet you some day at a reunion.
