One of the tasks the SMs had aboard ship was called "Dress Ship". This was done for major holidays while the ship was in port. The signal flags were linked together in a specific order from the bow to the main mast, over the rigs to the helo tower aft.

My first assignment was to climb the main mast. I was SO afraid of heights back then that I was willing to be written up rather than go up there. John told me he would help me overcome my fear...and he told me just to go up the ladder on the mast a few steps and stop...so I did. Then HE got on right below me and told me I would have to climb over him to get down! It was a standoff for a few minutes..but up I went until I was up by the massive radar antenna on the mast.

Fast forward to our first liberty in Italy...and John and I are at the base of Mt. Vesuvius. The only way up is to take a ski-lift ride! I balked again because of the height and fear the cables would snap. John talked to me for an HOUR trying to calm my fears. He said he wouldn't go up without me! When he said that I knew it may be our only chance to EVER go up inside a volcano and I said let's do this!

Awesome view...awesome time...and one incredibly awesome guy....may he rest in peace...
